The one number that decides it
Checked-bag price is the swing factor. On routes where the bag alone is $35+ each way, the bundle beat à la carte 41 times out of 46. On bag-included fares it lost every single comparison — you are paying twice for the same suitcase.
When flex is worth real money
The flex component is priced like insurance, and like insurance it is only worth it when the odds are bad: peak-season trips, tight connections, or anything booked more than 90 days out. For a direct flight three weeks away, skip it and bank the $412 average saving.
